1) Further trends into marketing yourself in a 21st century economy and employment environment carrying on further from here.
2) Specific detail into top marketing trends with emerging technologies including mobile & virtual carrying on further from here, here, here, here, and here.
The business environment and world of employment is going through a busy and turmoil time. Finding an exact job that matches your skills and what you enjoy doing so you feel productive, valued, empowered, trained and ready to deliver is harder and harder in today's day and age.
LinkedIN totally revolutionized the way we do business forever. It gave professionals a platform to connect, network, share, collaborate, hire and refine. LinkedIN cofounder and chairman Reid Hoffman is no doubt one of the most inspirational and motivating leaders we have in the business and start-up world today. Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha have written a practical, pragmatic and exceptionally useful book in terms of understanding what you can do to elevate your career and what impact social networks (ecspecially a professional social network such as LinkedIN) has had on our professional careers, job seeking, sharing information, motivating and performance. THE START-UP OF YOU: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career is a perceptive, astute and very sharp book about how the new tools within social media can help you elevate your career, make the right connections to find a job that matches you... the ultimate message that writers Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha convey is that the start-up IS you (or as Jay Z once said "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man!)
The authors have a distinctively educative writing style that manages to channel the right information in terms of what you need to do to find a career and job in a highly connected and networked world.
The advice in THE START-UP OF YOU: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career can be applied over a period of time. The main message is that we are all entrepreneurs and innovators in today's real-time digital world, and in order to survive long-term you will need to not only understand the tools of business communications, but have the ability to maybe utilize them on a daily basis.
Advice on entrepreneurialism (becoming more and more of a factor perhaps when employing peole) is also given solid and strong. Are employers after highly creative and well-attuned staff on Social Media who love to blog, vlog, and tweet for business development with a less formal structure as long as the end-results and deadline is delivered by a certain timeframe, or are employers after employees in a more formal structure of pre-defined tasks that are reptitive and need to be done with slight variation week to week?
What sort of skills do I require for my employer, and what hat should I wear? How much time and money should I invest into myself to upskill and upgrade my knowledge? What are the latest tools I need to know and have? Do I need knowledge of them only, or do I need to use them practically everyday. For example I use Blogger, WordPress, Twitter and Instagram more than 5 times per week. As a passionate hobby and to showcase my skills and variety. These are all questions I've had to ask myself over the past few months as I refined what one of my dream jobs would be (more on that here).
Here are some of the top take-out's:
Page 4 - "This book is not a job hunting manual. You won't find tips and tricks on how to format your resume or how to prepare for a job interview. What you will find are the start-up mindset and skill sets you need to adapt to the future. You will find strategies that will help you expand the reach of your network, gain a competitive edge, and land better professional opportunities"
Page 21 - "Instead, Netflix stays nimble, and iterates, always in the test phase. We call this mindset permanent-beta"
Page 34 - "The person passionate about what he or she is doing will outwork and outlast the guy motivated solely by making money. It can be easy to forget this when heading the startup of you"
Page 63 -"A question people sometimes ask us is "What's the best way to get into Silicon Valley start-ups"? Well, there are various ways, but the first step is this: move here"!
Page 64 - "Start a personal blog and begin developing a public reputation and personal portfolio of work that's not tied to your employer"
Page 83 - "Very few startups are started by only one person. Everyone in the entrepreneurial community agrees that assembling a talented team is as important as it gets"
Page 84 - "Vinod Khosla, cofounder Sun Microsystems and Silicon Valley investor says "The team you build is the company you build". Mark Zuckerberg says he spends half his time recruiting"
Page 199 - "For centuries, literacy meant the ability to read and write. Those who could read books - and write them - held the power of society. Then the Internet came along and massively multiplied the amount of information created and indexed on a daily basis. Power shifted to those who, in addition to being reading-writing literate, could also wade through the ocean of results, and follow the links that lead to the best information."

Blogs are typically composed mainly of text content, but can and do include such elements as phone, videos, audios and flash. Over 60% of the websites on the Internet today still do not have any kind of blog. If you don't have a blog, you are missing out on trafffic. Blogs are a great way of developing a following, starting a cultural trend or a political movement, establishing yourself as an expert, landing a book deal, and paying yourself through ad sales to indulge in your favourite expensive hobby"
Page 27 - "The top three blog systems are WordPress, Blogger, and TypePad. WordPress has the majority of the market share due to the vast amount of add-ons available. But Blogger and TypePad habe been noted as easier to use and still maintain quite a few blogs on their servers"

Page 137 - What Are Web Apps?
"An "app" (which is shorthand for "application") is a piece of of software that may be found on your computer, on your mobile phone, or across the Web. Oriignally, all software programs were called "apps". But recently apps have come to be used specifically to refer to the small programs found on iPhones and now other smartphones, Facebook, and Google"
Page 196 - "Using this information, they developed three-month and six-month SMART goals. SMART goals are goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely."
Michael Tasner ends the book with "I'll be very blunt with you: my passion is not for doing Internet marketing for others and making them rich. My passion is for enabling and educating others to use my techniques to make themselves rich"
Both books have different purposes, yet still succeed in terms of updating you with the latest and modern trends within the business age with a technological focus.
Despite being 5+ years since they were written, they hold the test of time remarkably well and are still extremely relevant and up-to-date.
